Giuseppe Occhialini: Italian Physicist and Pioneer in Particle Physics

Giuseppe Occhialini was an Italian physicist who made significant contributions to the field of elementary particle physics. He is best known for his discovery of the pion, a subatomic particle.

Early Life and Education

Occhialini was born on December 5, 1907, in Fossombrone, Italy. He attended the University of Florence, where he completed his undergraduate studies in 1929. After graduating, Occhialini began his career in Florence, working as a physicist.

Work in Cambridge

In 1932, Occhialini relocated to Cambridge and joined the Cavendish Laboratory. It was there that he collaborated with P. Blackett and constructed the Wilson cloud chamber, using the Rossi technique of paired particle counters. Blackett later conducted research on Cosmic Rays using the chamber and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1948 for his advancements in Wilson cloud chamber technology and the discoveries made using it.

Research in Brazil and Bristol

Following an invitation from G. Vatagin, Occhialini worked on cosmic rays in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where his student, C. Lattes, joined him. He also worked at a biophysics laboratory in Rio de Janeiro. In 1944, Occhialini and Lattes moved to Bristol and joined S. Powell's group at the University of Bristol. During this period, Occhialini, along with Powell, Lattes, and Muirhead, used photographic emulsion to detect elementary particles and discovered the decay of pions. Powell was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1950 for these results. Occhialini collaborated with his future wife, Constance Charlotte Dilworth, a student of Powell, in improving photographic emulsion detectors.

Contributions to Cosmic Research

Occhialini shifted his focus to cosmic research and founded the LFCTR Institute (now known as the Institute of Space Astrophysics and Cosmic Physics) in Italy. He became its first director and played a crucial role in the establishment of the European space program. In recognition of his contributions, Occhialini received the Wolf Prize in Physics in 1979 and was elected an honorary member of the European Physical Society in 1993.
