Biography of Doc Rivers

Doc Rivers is a former American basketball player and current head coach of the Boston Celtics. He attended Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois before playing college basketball at Marquette University. In 1982, Rivers won a silver medal at the FIBA World Championship in Colombia and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

After college, Rivers entered the 1982 NBA Draft and was selected 31st overall by the Atlanta Hawks. He spent seven seasons with the Hawks, playing as a point guard and assisting team star Dominique Wilkins. In the 1986-87 season, Rivers achieved a double-double, averaging 12.4 points and 10.0 assists per game.

Rivers later played for the Los Angeles Clippers (1991-1992), New York Knicks (1992-1994), and San Antonio Spurs (1994-1996) before retiring as a professional basketball player.

In 1999, Rivers began his coaching career with the Orlando Magic and spent four seasons with the team. He was named NBA Coach of the Year in his debut season for leading the team to a significant improvement in the Eastern Conference standings. Although they did not make the playoffs, the team finished in ninth place after being the weakest team the previous season.

After a year of working as a television commentator for NBA on ABC, Rivers became the head coach of the Boston Celtics in 2004. Under his leadership, the Celtics won their 17th NBA championship on June 17, 2008.

Rivers had the honor of coaching the Eastern Conference team in the 2008 NBA All-Star Game after the Celtics had the best win-loss record in the Eastern Conference.
