Biography of Gloria Foster
Gloria Foster was an American actress best known for her work on stage, where she portrayed a variety of African-American characters. She gained recognition for her performances in acclaimed plays such as "In White America" and "Having Our Say," winning three Obie Awards for her theater work. However, she is most recognizable in the film industry for her role as The Oracle in the iconic science fiction action film "The Matrix" (1999) and its sequel, "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003).
Early Life and Education
Gloria Foster was born on November 16, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She grew up in Janesville, Wisconsin, with her maternal grandparents Eleanor and Clyde Sudds. Foster initially attended public speaking classes at the University of Illinois before debuting professionally at the Court Theater at the University of Chicago after graduating from the Goodman Theater School of Drama.
Theater Career
In 1961, Foster made a name for herself on Broadway by playing the role of Ruth in Lorraine Hansberry's classic play "A Raisin in the Sun." She moved to New York City in 1963 and auditioned for the play "In White America" by Martin B. Duberman, which led to her receiving widespread acclaim and winning an Obie Award.
Foster continued to work extensively in theater, portraying 27 different characters in the historical drama "In White America" in 1963. Her portrayal of Medea in 1965 earned her a Theatre World Award. In 1989, she won her third Obie Award for her performance as Molly Hofenburg in Bill Gunn's play "Forbidden City." Foster returned to the stage in 1995, starring alongside Mary Alice in the Broadway play "Having Our Say," where she received critical acclaim for her portrayal of 103-year-old Sadie Delany.
Film and Television Work
Before gaining recognition in the film industry, Foster had a successful career in theater. However, she also appeared in various television projects, including the role of Shana in the series "I Spy" and guest appearances in episodes of "Law & Order" and "The Cosby Show." Her portrayal of Betty Shabazz, the widow of civil rights activist Malcolm X, in "Law & Order" was particularly notable.
Unfortunately, on September 29, 2001, Foster passed away in New York City at the age of 67 due to complications from diabetes. She was buried at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn. In the final installment of "The Matrix" trilogy, "The Matrix Revolutions," Mary Alice replaced Foster in the role of The Oracle, and the film provided an explanation for the casting change by stating that "The Matrix fights Phee."
