Uganda's President During Tumultuous Times

Early Life and Career

Yusuf Lule was a prominent Ugandan politician who served as the country's president in 1979-1980. Born in the Buganda region, Lule pursued a legal education at King's College London and returned home in 1950 to become one of Uganda's first lawyers.

Rise to Power

Lule joined the Uganda National Congress party and later became a member of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC). In 1962, he was appointed Minister of Justice in the first government of independent Uganda.

Exile and Return

After Idi Amin came to power in 1971, Lule fled into exile in the United States, where he practiced law in Mount Vernon. Following Amin's overthrow in 1979, Lule returned to Uganda.

Presidency and Coup

Under the influence of Tanzanian military forces, Lule became president in 1979, replacing Yusuf Lule. However, in May 1980, Lule's attempt to remove the army chief of staff led to his overthrow in a military coup led by Paulo Muwanga.

Later Life

After his presidency, Lule lived in New York City, where he continued his legal career. In 2002, he returned to Uganda but remained largely out of local politics.
