Robina Nabbanja: A Trailblazing Leader
Early Life and EducationRobina Nabbanja was born on December 17, 1969, in the present-day Kakumiro district. She received her primary and secondary education at Nkooko Primary School and St. Edward's Secondary School Bukuumi, respectively.
From 1990 to 2000, Nabbanja pursued certifications and diplomas in leadership, management, and development from various institutions, including Makerere University, the Uganda Management Institute, Islamic University in Uganda, and Kyankwanzi National Leadership Institute. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Democracy and Development Studies and a Master of Arts in Development Studies from Makerere University.
Career in Teaching and Local Government
Nabbanja's career began as a secondary school teacher at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Kakumiro from 1993 to 1996. She then served as a district councilor representing Nkooko County (now Kibale) from 1998 to 2001. During her tenure, she also held the positions of district secretary for health, gender, and community services.
From 2001 to 2010, Nabbanja worked as a resident district commissioner in the districts of Pallisa, Busia, and Budaka.
Entry into Electoral Politics
In 2011, Nabbanja joined Uganda's electoral politics by successfully contesting for the Kibale district women's representative seat in the 9th Parliament (2011-2016). When Kakumiro district was created in 2016, she ran for the district's women's constituency and was again victorious.
Ministerial Appointments
Following a cabinet reshuffle on December 14, 2019, Nabbanja was appointed Minister of State for Health (General Duties). She was sworn into office on January 13, 2020, after parliamentary approval. She held this position until May 3, 2021.
Premiership
In the cabinet formed on June 8, 2021, Nabbanja was appointed Prime Minister of the 82-member cabinet. She concurrently serves as the elected Member of Parliament representing Kakumiro district's women's constituency in the 10th Parliament (2016-2021) and the 11th Parliament (2021-2026).
