Gombryn Khishigbaatar emerged as a formidable force in freestyle wrestling, specializing in the bantamweight division (48 kg). He earned the esteemed title of Honored Master of Sports and represented Mongolia at two Olympic Games: 1976 and 1980.

1976 Montreal Olympics:In Khishigbaatar's Olympic debut, he navigated the tournament with impressive victories over John de Jesus of Puerto Rico, William Rosado of the United States, Willie Heckmann of West Germany, and Kuddusi Özdemir of Turkey. However, his medal hopes were dashed in a gripping match against Roman Dmitriev of the Soviet Union, resulting in a commendable fourth-place finish.

1980 Moscow Olympics:While competing in Moscow, Khishigbaatar faced a challenging start. He suffered consecutive defeats against Chang Se-hon of North Korea, who ultimately claimed silver, and Claudio Pollio of Italy, the eventual Olympic champion. This setback eliminated him from the tournament.
