Gopal Godse: Brother of Mahatma Gandhi's Assassin

Role in Mahatma Gandhi's Assassination

Gopal Godse was the younger brother of Nathuram Godse, who carried out the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi's nonviolent resistance and pacifist stance strongly opposed by right-wing Hindu nationalist organizations.

Conspiracy and Arrest

Vinayak Savarkar is believed to be the mastermind behind the conspiracy, while Narayan Apte was officially declared as the organizer in court. Gopal Godse was an active participant, obtaining weapons with Dagambar Badge. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was shot and killed during a prayer meeting. Gopal Godse was arrested on February 5.

Sentencing and Imprisonment

Gopal Godse was sentenced to 18 years in prison but was released in October 1964. He was rearrested a month later and held in prison for over a year. He was finally released in late 1965 and settled in Pune for the remainder of his life.

Post-Release and Legacy

Throughout his life, Gopal Godse expressed no remorse for his role in the assassination. Some Indian nationalist groups continue to venerate the conspirators as national heroes.

Later Years and Death

Gopal Godse spent his later years in Pune. He passed away at an undisclosed date.
