Early Life and CareerGor Minasyan, born on October 25, 1994, in Gyumri, Armenia, initially pursued wrestling and boxing. At 10, he embarked on a weightlifting journey under the guidance of Akop Piloyan. In 2010, he claimed a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in the +85 kg weight category.
Controversial Period
In 2013, Minasyan's career took a downturn when he tested positive for nandrolone, resulting in a two-year suspension. Upon his return in 2015, he swiftly re-established his dominance in the super heavyweight division.
Olympic Success and International Recognition
Minasyan's remarkable talent shone through at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he earned a silver medal, behind the legendary Georgian lifter, Lasha Talakhadze. His consistent performances cemented his status as a global powerhouse, with silver medals at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships.
European and Asian Titles
In 2021, Minasyan's momentum continued with a silver at the European Championships in Moscow and a bronze at the World Championships in Tashkent. The following year, he won a bronze at the European Championships in Tirana and then showcased his dominance at the Asian Championships, breaking records in snatch and total.
Citizenship Change and Continued Success
In July 2022, Minasyan made the decision to represent Bahrain. His debut was a triumph, winning the Asian Championships with new Asian records. He went on to secure a silver at the World Championships in Bogota, narrowly edging out his compatriot, Varazdat Lalayan. In 2023, he claimed another Asian title and set new records in snatch and total.
Olympic Bronze in Paris
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Minasyan earned a bronze medal in the +102 kg category with a total lift of 461 kg, 9 kg behind the gold medalist, Talakhadze. Despite the result, his determination and resilience have been an inspiration to weightlifting enthusiasts worldwide.
