Early Life and Education
John Clinton was born in England and pursued his musical studies at the Royal College of Music in London. He completed his studies in 1938 and later joined the college's faculty as a teacher. Among his notable students was Lorna Haywood.
Military Service
During World War II, Clinton served in the Royal Air Force.Musical Career
Choral Vicarship and Collaboration with Thomas Beecham
In 1946, Clinton became a choral vicar at St. Paul's Cathedral. The late 1940s marked a period of close collaboration with renowned conductor Thomas Beecham. Clinton participated in Beecham's performances of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Joseph Haydn's oratorio "The Creation," Hector Berlioz's "L'enfance du Christ," and Frederick Delius's "Sea Drift." Additionally, he sang in Delius's opera "A Village Romeo and Juliet" for Beecham's 70th birthday celebration and its subsequent recording. However, Clinton generally refrained from performing in opera.
Bach Recordings and Leadership of Birmingham School of Music
Clinton participated in two recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion": in 1947 with conductor Reginald Jacques and in 1958 with Ralph Vaughan Williams. Later in his career, Clinton became the head of the Birmingham School of Music.
