Grace Darling, a national heroine of Great Britain, was born on November 24, 1815, and passed away on October 20, 1842. She became famous after the sinking of the British steamship "Forfarshire" in 1838. Grace was born in Bamburgh and spent her youth with her parents at Longstone Lighthouse. Her father, William Darling, was the lighthouse keeper. As Grace grew older, she began assisting her father and often spent nights at the lighthouse, gazing into the dark distance. Grace knew that one day she would have to perform a heroic act that would save many lives.

The Rescue Mission
On September 7, 1838, while on duty at the lighthouse, Grace witnessed the launch of the British steamship "Forfarshire." A severe storm was raging in the vicinity of the lighthouse. For unknown reasons, the captain of the "Forfarshire" steered towards the rocky shores near Longstone Lighthouse. Grace and her father, William Darling, couldn't stand idly by. They were the first to rush to the aid of the drowning people, approximately 60 individuals. Fearlessly, Grace ventured out into the storm on a small fishing boat. Her main goal was to save the lives of those struggling in the water. Due to the limited capacity of Grace's boat, she had to make multiple trips to the "Forfarshire." It was a daunting task, as strong winds and icy water significantly hindered the process. Once all the people were rescued from the sinking ship, Grace and her mother cared for the injured for several days. When the weather improved, the survivors were transported to a hospital.

Recognition and Legacy
Initially, Grace Darling and her father's heroism went unnoticed. Newspapers were filled with headlines about the terrible tragedy, while the police were busy searching for those responsible. However, as the dust settled, the Darling family received significant attention. People learned that the true heroes of the event were the lighthouse keeper and his modest daughter.

Grace's act of bravery was acknowledged by the British public. Newspapers began writing about her, and she became a national heroine. In early 1842, Grace Darling fell seriously ill. She caught a severe cold and struggled to recover from pneumonia for several months. In October 1842, Grace Darling passed away.

To this day, Grace Darling is considered a national heroine. Her feat was immortalized in William Wordsworth's poem, "Grace Darling." People decided to commemorate the memory of this courageous young woman. The lighthouse she lived in was declared a national museum.
