Early Life and Persecution

Paul Lan Fu, a martyr of the Roman Catholic Church, was born into a devout Christian family in 1893. He was the only son of Lan Yang.

In 1899-1900, the Boxer Rebellion ravaged China, targeting Christians for violent persecution. On July 16, 1900, the rebels descended upon Paul's village where he lived with his mother.

They seized Lan Yang and tied her to a tree. Paul was away when this occurred. Upon returning home, he found his mother suffering and wept. She comforted her son, urging him to remain faithful.

The rebels demanded that Paul's mother renounce her Christian beliefs, but she refused. In retaliation, they stabbed her with a spear and severed Paul's hands. Both were then cast into a bonfire.

Martyrdom and Sainthood

Paul Lan Fu's martyrdom earned him the reverence of the Catholic Church. He was beatified by Pope Pius XII on April 17, 1955, and canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000, along with 120 other Chinese martyrs.

Commemoration

The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Paul Lan Fu's feast day on July 9th. His unwavering faith and sacrifice inspire countless Catholics around the world.
