Early Life and Career

Australian violinist Richard Tognetti studied at the Queensland Conservatorium, and then the San Francisco Conservatory. He served as concertmaster of the Australian Youth Orchestra and made his solo debut in 1985, performing Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Focus on Contemporary Music

Tognetti has a strong focus on contemporary music. He has premiered many new works, including the Australian premiere of Witold Lutosławski's Partita for Violin and Piano. He has received critical acclaim for his performances of this piece.

Quartet Arditti

From 1994 to 2005, Tognetti was the second violinist in the renowned Arditti Quartet. During his time with the quartet, he recorded over 70 albums and performed over 300 world premieres of works by composers such as Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Maurizio Kagel, György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Charles Wuorinen.

Solo Career

Despite his busy schedule with the Arditti Quartet, Tognetti also maintained a separate solo career. He performed works such as Alban Berg's Violin Concerto.

New Beginnings

In 2005, Tognetti left the quartet and moved to San Francisco. He intended to focus on his solo career, but his plans were cut short by the sudden death of his father. Tognetti returned to Australia and became the artistic director of the Camerata – Queensland Chamber Orchestras.
