Poll's first international match took place on April 2, 1997, when he refereed a qualifier for the 1998 FIFA World Cup between Azerbaijan and Finland. He went on to officiate matches in the final stages of the UEFA European Championships in 2000 and 2004, as well as in the FIFA World Cups in 2002 and 2006.

Controversial Decisions

In the qualifying rounds for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Poll gained fame for awarding a disputed penalty to Slovenia in their match against Russia in the final minute of the game. The Slovenians went on to win the match with a score of 2-1.
