Biography of Granush Akopyan
Granush Grantovna Akopyan was an Armenian stateswoman and politician. She was born on April 12, 1954, in the village of Saruhan, Kamo District. Akopyan held various positions in the Armenian government and played a significant role in the country's political landscape.
Education and Early Career
From 1970 to 1975, Akopyan studied applied mathematics at Yerevan State University. She then worked as a mathematician. In 1987, she attended the Moscow Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, where she studied political science.
Akopyan continued her education at Yerevan State University, completing her legal studies from 1989 to 1994. She became a lawyer and earned a doctorate in jurisprudence. During this time, she also worked as a teaching assistant at Yerevan State University and held positions within the Communist Party's student organization.
Political Career
Akopyan's political career began in 1983 when she became the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Leninist Communist Youth Union (LKSM) in Armenia. She held this position until 1985 when she became the leader of the youth organization in Armenia and a member of the LKSM Bureau in Moscow.
In 1986, Akopyan was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and became a member of its Presidium. She served in this role until 1990. From 1990 to 1995, Akopyan was re-elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health and Social Issues.
In 1995, Akopyan became a member of the Armenian Parliament and served on the Standing Committee on Social Issues, Health, and Nature Conservation. She was a member of the "Republic" faction. From 1995 to 1997, she also served as the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Social Issues of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
From 1996 to 1998, Akopyan served as the Minister of Labor and Social Security of Armenia. After that, she was re-elected to the Parliament in 1999 and served until 2003. During this time, she was a member of the Standing Committee on External Relations and the Secretary of the parliamentary group "People's Deputy."
From 2003 to 2007, Akopyan served as a member of the Armenian Parliament, where she was the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Science, Education, and Culture. She was also the leader of the Armenian Parliament's delegation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Academic and Other Achievements
In addition to her political career, Akopyan pursued an academic career. In 1998, she defended her candidate dissertation, and in 2006, she obtained a doctorate in law and became a professor at Gavar State University. She taught at Gavar State University and the State Academy of Management of Armenia.
Akopyan was also involved in various organizations and foundations. She served as the Chairperson of the International Association of Armenian Women and co-chaired the Health Protection Association for Women. She was a trustee of the "Yerevan," "Cambridge-Yerevan," and "Children's Homes of Armenia" funds and co-chaired the Board of Trustees of the Armenian-American Health Center.
Throughout her career, Akopyan received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1996. She authored four books and more than 40 scientific articles.
