Biography of Jacques Coeur
Jacques Coeur, a prominent French industrialist and statesman, was born as the son of a bourgeois fur trader. Considered the founder of French capitalism, he served as an advisor to King Charles VII.
Contributions to Trade and Support for King Charles VII
Through extensive trade in the Levant, Coeur accumulated wealth and was able to provide financial assistance to King Charles VII. He offered the king four military squads to conquer Normandy and played a crucial role in organizing municipal administration. Additionally, Coeur established a stock exchange and a water supply system in the city of Montpellier.
Recognition and Financial Responsibilities
In 1440, King Charles VII granted Coeur nobility and appointed him as an envoy to Genoa and Rome. In 1450, Coeur was entrusted with the management of finances. He persuaded the king to implement economic reforms focused on protectionist policies.
Accusations and Exile
Despite his wealth and influence, Coeur's creditors sought to rid themselves of their debts by accusing him of counterfeiting coins, poisoning Agnes Sorel (the king's mistress), and committing treason. Coeur was arrested, imprisoned, stripped of his immense fortune, and banished from France.
Service in Exile and Death
In exile, Coeur was entrusted by Pope Callixtus III with commanding a fleet against the Turks. He is believed to have died on the island of Chios. Upon the dying request of Coeur, his children, through the intervention of King Charles VII, regained a portion of their confiscated wealth.
Legacy
The later years of Jacques Coeur's life are depicted in the historical adventure novel "The Royal Treasurer" by Thomas B. Costain. Coeur's story showcases his significant contributions to French trade and his tragic downfall due to false accusations and political intrigue.
