American Artist, Landscape Painter

Granville Redmond was an American artist known for his talent in landscape painting. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1871.

Early Life and Education

Redmond's family moved to San Jose, California when he was a child, possibly seeking better educational opportunities for him due to his hearing impairment. It was at the Berkeley School for the Deaf where Redmond spent over ten years, from 1879 to 1890, and his talent for drawing was discovered. His teachers encouraged him by providing lessons in drawing, painting, and pantomime. After leaving the school, Redmond continued his studies at the California School of Design in San Francisco for three years, where he was mentored by Arthur Matthews and Amedee Joullion.

Friendships and Travels

During his time at the California School of Design, Redmond formed lifelong friendships with artists Gottardo Piazzoni and Giuseppe Cadenasso. In the 1890s, he received a scholarship to study at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he shared a room with deaf sculptor Douglas Tilden. Upon returning to California in 1898, Redmond settled in Los Angeles and painted numerous beach landscapes. In 1899, he married Carrie Ann Jean, a former student of the Illinois School for the Deaf. They had three children, although it is unknown whether they inherited their parents' hearing impairment or could hear.

Artistic Style and Recognition

Redmond's paintings were characterized by their tonalism style, where a single tone dominates the composition, creating a specific atmosphere and mood. His works gained recognition and were exhibited in San Francisco in 1904, receiving widespread acclaim in 1905. He was hailed as a great landscape artist and even compared to Matisse. Redmond's dark-toned canvases have become highly sought after by collectors and are featured in prominent American museums such as the Irvine Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, New York City Museum, and Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.

Legacy

Granville Redmond's name is frequently mentioned in art books, especially those focused on California art. His paintings continue to be highly appealing to collectors and command significant prices at auctions. Redmond's contributions to the art world, particularly in landscape painting, have solidified his place in American art history.
