Graziadio Isaia Ascoli: Italian Linguist
Early Life and EducationGraziadio Isaia Ascoli was born into an Italian-speaking Jewish family in the multicultural city of Gorizia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in Italy. As a child, he acquired multiple languages spoken in the city: German, Friulian, and Venetian, in addition to Italian. An autodidact, he published his first significant work on Oriental languages in 1854.
Academic Career
In 1860, Ascoli was appointed Professor of Linguistics at the Royal Academy of Science and Literature in Milan, where he introduced courses in comparative philology, Romance languages, and Sanskrit.
Contributions to Linguistics
Ascoli made significant contributions to the study of Indo-European and Semitic language families. He was a pioneer in the study of Romani (Gypsy) and Celtic languages. Notably, he developed the first systematic classification of Italian dialects.
Substratum Theory
Ascoli is renowned for his substratum theory, which proposes that language formation and change result from interference when populations shift from one language to another.
Legacy
Graziadio Isaia Ascoli passed away in Milan. His legacy as a linguist continues to inspire scholars today. He is recognized for his pioneering work in comparative linguistics, dialectology, and the study of language contact phenomena.
