Birth and Early Life
Igor Shekhter was born in Simferopol in 1917, the year of the October Revolution. His father rose to a prominent economic position in the new socialist system, while his mother was a schoolteacher. Thanks to his mother and grandmother's efforts, Igor spoke fluent German from childhood and had access to a remarkable home library.
Educational Journey
Initial plans to pursue engineering at the Bauman Institute under his father's wishes were short-lived. Igor dropped out a year later and enrolled instead at the All-Union Communist Institute of Journalism (VKIZ). However, this decision led to a rift with his father.
Impact of Stalin's Repressions
Igor's father's arrest in 1937 shattered his family. His mother kept the news a secret, fearing the consequences. Only after a denunciation by a fellow villager did Igor learn of his father's fate. Expelled from the institute, he faced severe hardship, including homelessness and poverty.
Wartime Service
Despite his status as an "enemy of the people's son," Igor pursued higher education. He graduated from the Institute of Foreign Languages just as World War II broke out. Both Igor and his younger brother, Lenya, volunteered for the front. Lenya tragically died in the first battle, while Igor was severely wounded and hospitalized.
Scientific Breakthroughs
After the war, Igor began developing innovative methods for teaching foreign languages. In the late 1940s, he started his scientific research, and in the early 1950s, published his first French textbooks.
Challenging the Status Quo
Igor's approach to language learning, which emphasized communication over grammar, faced stiff opposition from traditional philologists. Despite support from some academics and newspapers, the Ministry of Education relentlessly targeted him.
Perseverance and Innovation
Undeterred by setbacks, Igor climbed the academic ladder. When his department at the Institute of Foreign Languages was closed, he obtained permission to work at Gosplan. When Gosplan closed, he established a department at the Academy of Sciences.
Privilege and Public Outreach
Despite the resistance, Igor's method became a privilege for the elite, with high-ranking officials, diplomats, cosmonauts, and artists studying under him. However, Igor yearned for his methods to become accessible to all.
Personal Transformation

Legacy and Impact
With the collapse of the old educational system, Igor finally opened his own school, implementing his emotion-sensory method. He mentored and trained over 2,500 teachers, who continue to teach his methods nationwide.
