Greg Giraldo was an American stand-up comedian, television host, and former lawyer. He gained fame through his performances on the cable television channel Comedy Central, where the use of strong language is allowed, as well as television shows such as 'Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn,' 'Lewis Black's Root of All Evil,' and 'Friday Night Stand-Up with Greg Giraldo,' which he hosted.

Early Life and Education

Greg Giraldo was born on December 10, 1965, in the Bronx, New York City, and grew up in Queens. He attended the Regis High School, a prestigious Catholic Jesuit school that only admits academically gifted boys. Giraldo was the eldest son of an immigrant couple, with his father coming to the United States from Colombia and his mother from Spain. As a result, he was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition. During the summer months, he participated in the 'Camp Rising Sun,' a special fully-funded summer educational program for 14-16-year-old students, founded by the Louis August Jonas Foundation.

Legal Career and Transition to Comedy

After graduating from high school, Giraldo earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia University and later obtained a law degree from Harvard Law School. Prior to pursuing a career in comedy, Giraldo worked as a lawyer, spending just under a year at the law firm 'Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.' Interestingly, he rarely discussed his career as a lawyer. Giraldo regularly performed at the 'Comedy Cellar' club in Manhattan, was a frequent guest on 'Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn,' played the lead role in the short-lived sitcom 'Common Law' in 1996, and appeared in several unaired TV show pilots, including 'The Greg Giraldo Show' and 'Gone Hollywood' for Comedy Central.

Giraldo was highly regarded by 'The New York Times' as a talented comedian with a vibrant and appealing personality. He made approximately ten appearances on popular shows such as 'The Late Show with David Letterman' and 'Late Night with Conan O'Brien,' and consistently appeared on 'The Howard Stern Show.' His show 'Friday Night Stand-Up with Greg Giraldo' premiered in late 2005 and transformed into 'Stand-Up Nation with Greg Giraldo' in 2006. Personal Life and Tragic Ending

Giraldo was married twice. His first marriage ended quickly when he divorced at the age of 24. In his second marriage, he had three sons with his wife Mary-Ann Giraldo. However, they lived separately and eventually divorced a year before his death. Giraldo openly acknowledged his struggles with alcohol, which may have played a role in his personal difficulties. On September 25, 2010, Giraldo suffered an overdose of prescribed medication. After he failed to appear for a scheduled performance at 'The Stress Factory' comedy club, he was found in a hotel room at the 'Hyatt Hotel' in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and was taken to the nearest medical center by the police. Giraldo spent four days in a coma before his family decided to remove life support. He passed away on September 29, 2010, at the age of 44.
