Biography of Greg Ginn
Early Life and CareerGreg Ginn is a guitarist, poet-songwriter, and singer, best known as the leader and primary songwriter for the hardcore punk band "Black Flag" which he founded and led from 1976 to 1986. Ginn's musical career began in 1976 and has continued to this day. He actively tours the country with concerts and releases albums. In 2009, he released the albums "Connecting" and "The Goof Off Experts".
Family and Solo Career
Greg Ginn's younger brother, Raymond Pettibon, is a well-known artist. His early works served as album covers for "Black Flag," but the brothers had a falling out in the mid-1980s and have not been in contact since then. After the breakup of "Black Flag," Ginn recorded several solo albums and performed with various groups such as "HOR," "The October Faction," "Confront James," and "EL BAD." Ginn is also the owner of the independent recording studio "SST," which he founded as a teenager. Originally intended as an electronics company, it was named "Solid State Transmitters."
Musical Style and Recognition
Greg Ginn's style has been compared by Henry Rollins, the vocalist of "Black Flag," to jazz saxophonists Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy rather than typical punk guitarists. Ginn was a strong advocate of jazz music, particularly saxophone or piano performances. A critic in a review of "Slip It In" by "Black Flag" noted that "Ginn's playing became increasingly avant-garde over time. Instead of simply churning out one banal solo after another, he freely roamed in harmonic spaces up and down the neck like a jazzist such as James Blood Ulmer, making his routine passages more interesting than most imitators."
Legacy and Personal Life
Greg Ginn is ranked ninety-ninth in Rolling Stone magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." He is also known for being an active rescuer of cats, with around thirty living in his own home. In September 2003, "Black Flag" organized a charity reunion concert to benefit homeless cats at Ginn's initiative. Ginn has two daughters, Dori and Caris.
