Early Life and Musical BeginningsAlirio Díaz, born in La Ceiba, Venezuela, developed a passion for music at a young age. At sixteen, he left his hometown for Carora to study at a music conservatory under the guidance of Laudelino Mejías. While learning clarinet and saxophone, he earned a living as a newspaper typesetter.
Formal Training and European Recognition
In 1945, Díaz joined the Higher School of Music in Caracas, studying guitar with Raúl Borges. With a Venezuelan government grant, he pursued his studies in Europe in 1950, enrolling in the Madrid Conservatory under Regino Sainz de la Maza. However, he was drawn to the legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia. In 1951, Segovia invited him to his masterclass at the Chigiana Academy and later appointed him as his assistant.
International Acclaim and Debut Performance
Díaz's European fame skyrocketed in 1961 when Joaquín Rodrigo's "Invocación y danza," dedicated to him, won first prize at the ORTF International Composition Contest for Guitar. Díaz incorporated this demanding piece into his repertoire, performing it extensively throughout Europe.
