Biography of Gregory Brazel
Gregory John 'Bluey' Brazel was born in 1954 in Blacktown, New South Wales, Australia. He gained notoriety as an Australian criminal with a long list of offenses. Brazel joined the Australian army in 1974 and was involved in a hostage-taking incident during training in Healesville. Although he opened fire, his commanding officer was able to convince him to surrender.
After being released from prison prematurely, Brazel committed two brutal murders in 1990. Sharon Taylor's body was discovered in September in a shallow grave in Barongarook, Victoria. Roslyn Hayward was also killed in September of the same year in Sorrento, Victoria. Her body was identified almost a month later.
In addition to these murders, Brazel was also accused of shooting Mildred Teresa Hanmer during an armed robbery in Mordialloc, Victoria in 1982. Hanmer later died from her injuries in the hospital. Many years later, Brazel confessed to the crime in the hopes of receiving a reduced sentence.
Brazel's criminal record includes numerous convictions for robbery, armed attacks, bribery, contempt of court, and attempted murder. For the murders in the 1990s, he was sentenced to three consecutive life terms with the possibility of parole no earlier than 2020. Brazel is known for his extreme violence and is considered one of the most cunning and ruthless criminals in Australia.
While in prison, Brazel engaged in various acts of defiance and violence. He set his cell on fire, attacked guards, intimidated witnesses using forbidden phones, went on hunger strikes, and even cut off part of his own ear. Additionally, prison authorities intercepted a letter from Brazel that contained detailed information about five senior officers of the prison. How he obtained this undoubtedly confidential information remains unknown.
Currently, Gregory Brazel is held under enhanced security in Barwon Prison's top-security Acacia Unit.
