Formation and Early Years
In late 1995, former high school bandmates Anton Nikanov (bass) and Dmitry Petropavlovsky (drums) decided to revive their previous project, "The Flays." They enlisted Arseny Sokolov, the guitarist from the defunct band "Keksy." The trio held their first rehearsal in November of that year.
Initially, the band operated out of the student club at Saint Petersburg State University of Telecommunications (known as BSUIT). They adopted the name "The Flays" and began performing their own material, along with covers of songs by Sex Pistols and The Who.
Adopting the Name "Griby!"
In the fall of 1996, the band's style shifted towards more melodic music. They experimented with incorporating a keyboard player (Mikhail Smigelskiy) into the lineup. On November 21, 1996, they performed their first concert under the new name "Griby!" at Club Ten. This date marks the official birth of the band.
Early Performances and Recognition
Throughout the winter of 1996-1997, Griby! continued to play at Club Ten and the BSUIT student club. In April 1997, they took part in the annual Beatles tribute events organized by Kolya Vasin.
In 1998, Griby! were awarded a diploma at the citywide "Street Musicians Festival." They gained further exposure by performing at various clubs, including Dostoevsky and King-Ivy.
Growing Popularity and Recording
In 1999, Griby! expanded their reach to larger venues such as Zoopark and Wild Side. They also became a regular fixture at Club Boom Brazas.
By 2000, the band had released their first demo recording, "Booee-Valooee," at the Polygon recording studio. Later that year, they recorded a full-length single at Neva Studios, featuring seven songs, including hits like "Ya Skazhu Tebe" and "Moya Lyubov."
Continued Success and Legacy
Throughout 2001, Griby! maintained their active concert schedule, performing in various clubs in and around Saint Petersburg. They announced the release of their debut single at Club Faculty on November 2nd.
The band has continued to evolve over the years, and they are currently working on their next album. They remain an influential force in the Russian rock scene, known for their energetic live shows and catchy, melodic songs.
