Soviet and Ukrainian Football Legend: Grigoriy Ishchenko
Grigoriy Ishchenko, born into the world of football, embarked on a remarkable career that would span both the playing and coaching fields.
Playing Career
Ishchenko's journey began with FC Shahter Oleksandriya, before he landed at the prestigious Dynamo Kyiv, where he honed his skills in the reserve team for two seasons. He then returned home to FC Zirka Kirovohrad, captaining the team and leading them to championship glory at the USSR U-23 level. Later, he represented Dynamo Khmelnytskyi and ended his playing career with FC Sudostroitel Mykolaiv, where he lifted the Ukrainian Championship title in 1974.
Coaching Career
Upon retiring in 1976, Ishchenko transitioned seamlessly into coaching, taking on a role with Sudostroitel's youth academy. In 1979, he assumed the reins of the senior team, replacing Yuri Voynov. His coaching journey continued with stints at Podillia Khmelnytskyi (1982 and 1985), Zirka Kirovohrad, and Podillia Khmelnytskyi (1991).
He also managed FC Podillya (Khmelnytskyi), AERVIS (Mukachevo), Polissia Zhytomyr, and FC Polihraftekhnika (Oleksandriya). In 2003, Ishchenko teamed up with Roman Pokora and Vladimir Figel to rescue FC Mykolaiv from relegation to the Ukrainian Second League. Despite their efforts, the club finished in 12th place that season.
Honors and Family
Grigoriy Ishchenko's contributions to football were recognized with the esteemed title of Honored Coach of Ukraine in 2001. His legacy extends beyond his own career, as his son, Igor Ishchenko, followed in his footsteps and became a respected football referee, officiating matches in the Ukrainian Premier League and earning FIFA referee status.
