Early Life and Family
Grigory Surkis was born on September 4, 1949, in Odessa, Ukraine. His father, Mikhail Davidovich Surkis, was a military doctor, and his mother, Rimma Yakovlevna, worked in the trade industry. Grigory's older brother, Igor Surkis, is the president of FC Dynamo Kyiv.
Education and Career
Grigory Surkis received his higher education at the Kyiv Technological Institute of Food Industry, graduating in 1972 with a degree in "Machinery and Equipment for Food Industry" as a mechanical engineer.
After completing his education, Surkis began his career as a senior engineer at a technical supply company for the main fruit and vegetable industry in the Ukrainian SSR. He later worked as a supervisor and chief engineer at various construction and maintenance organizations in Kyiv.
In 1993, Surkis became the president of FC Dynamo Kyiv, one of Ukraine's most successful football clubs. He held this position until 1998 when he was appointed as the honorary president.
Contributions to Ukrainian Football and Sports
Grigory Surkis played a significant role in the development of Ukrainian football and sports. From 1996 to 2000, he served as the president of the Professional Football League of Ukraine and vice-president of the Football Federation of Ukraine.
Surkis also represented Ukraine as an ambassador to the European Commission for Sport, Tolerance, and Fair Play. In 1998, he became a member of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine and later became its vice-president.
In 2000, Surkis was elected as the president of the Football Federation of Ukraine, a position he held until 2012. He currently serves as the honorary president of the federation.
Political Career
In addition to his involvement in football, Grigory Surkis has been active in Ukrainian politics. He served as a member of the Ukrainian parliament, representing the Social Democratic Party (united) from 1998 to 2006. In 2019, Surkis was re-elected as a member of the Ukrainian parliament, this time representing the Opposition Platform - For Life party. He currently holds the position of Secretary of the Committee on Youth and Sports in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
