According to legend, Gu Kaizhi fell in love with a neighboring girl who did not reciprocate his affections. In desperation, he painted a portrait of her on a wall and pierced it with a thorn. The girl felt a sharp pain, and when Gu Kaizhi professed his love again, she accepted him. He then removed the concealed thorn from the portrait, and her pain vanished.
