Guillaume I, Count of Nevers and Auxerre
Guillaume I inherited the counties of Nevers and Auxerre in 1040 upon the death of his father, Renaud I. He continued his father's struggle against Duke Robert I of Burgundy, which ended with the duke's death in 1076. This was cemented by the marriage of the new Duke, Hugh I, to Guillaume's daughter, Sibylle.
Marriage and Inheritance
In 1039, Guillaume married Ermengarde, daughter and heiress of Count Renaud I of Tonnerre. When Renaud died in 1065, the county passed to his daughter and Guillaume. This union brought Tonnerre under the control of Nevers and Auxerre, a combination that lasted until 1262.
Succession and Children
Guillaume I died on a debated date, likely in 1083, but sometimes reported as 1098, 1097, or 1100. His domains were divided among his sons:
