Gunnar Sauer: German Football Legend

Early Life and Club Career

Gunnar Sauer was born in Cuxhaven, Germany, and spent a significant portion of his football career with Werder Bremen as a defender. His peak period with the club came from 1986 to 1991, as he only played 17 matches for Bremen in all other years combined. In 1996, he joined Berlin-based Hertha BSC, helping them gain promotion to the Bundesliga. After Hertha, Sauer had stints with Leipzig and Oldenburg before retiring in 1999.

International Career

Sauer was selected for the West Germany national team for the 1988 European Championship but did not make any appearances. He never received another international call-up. However, he did represent the West German Olympic team in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he earned a bronze medal.
