Denis Irwin: A Legendary Defender

Early Career

Denis Irwin's football journey began at Leeds United. In 1986, he joined Oldham Athletic as a free agent. With Oldham, Irwin reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the League Cup final in 1990.

Manchester United Era (1990-2002)

Later that year, Irwin made a significant move to Manchester United for £625,000. Over 12 years at Old Trafford, he became a key player, delivering seven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, a League Cup, a Cup Winners' Cup, and a UEFA Champions League triumph. Irwin's versatility, playing on both flanks of the defense, and his expertise in free-kicks and penalties made him a valuable asset to Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.

Final Match and Retirement

Irwin's final match for Manchester United came on May 12, 2002, in a home league fixture against Charlton Athletic on the last day of the 2001/02 Premier League season. Captaining the Red Devils, Irwin led them to a goalless draw.

Wolverhampton Wanderers (2002-2004)

In July 2002, Irwin joined Wolverhampton Wanderers as a free agent. Coincidentally, his former United teammate, Paul Ince, also joined after leaving Middlesbrough. Wolves gained promotion to the Premier League in 2003. In a match against Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Red Devils faithful gave Irwin a standing ovation. However, Wolverhampton Wanderers were relegated at the end of the 2003/04 season, and Irwin, at the age of 38, decided to retire from playing.

Post-Retirement Career

In 2004, Denis Irwin returned to Old Trafford as a presenter for the club's television channel, MUTV.

International Career

Irwin represented the Republic of Ireland 56 times between 1990 and 1999, scoring four goals. He participated in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where Ireland reached the last 16.
