Born in 1947 in Hazenberg, Germany, Günter Kaufmann's life was marked by both fame and tragedy.

Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Kaufmann began his acting career in 1970 with a small role in Volker Schlöndorff's "Baal." However, it was his collaboration with Rainer Werner Fassbinder that thrust Kaufmann into the spotlight. Fassbinder cast him in 14 of his films, including "Gods of the Plague" (1970) and "Querelle" (1982).

Personal Life and Relationship with Fassbinder

Kaufmann and Fassbinder had a tumultuous romantic relationship. Despite Kaufmann being married, they began an affair. Their relationship was strained, with Fassbinder often attempting to buy Kaufmann's attention with lavish gifts. After their breakup in 1971, Fassbinder married Ingrid Caven, who also appeared in many of his films.

Murder Accusation and Imprisonment

In 2001, Kaufmann became involved in a tragic incident. His accountant, Hartmut Hagen, was found dead, and Kaufmann was charged with murder. Despite his initial confession that he had accidentally fallen on Hagen during a fight, the death was later ruled a homicide. Kaufmann was sentenced to 15 years in prison for extortion and robbery.

Innocence and Release

In 2005, a police investigation revealed that Kaufmann had been innocent and had only confessed to protect his wife. Hagen had actually been murdered by three men hired by Kaufmann's wife without his knowledge. Kaufmann was released from prison in 2005.

Later Years and Death

Kaufmann resumed his acting career after his release, appearing in supporting roles in films and television shows. Sadly, he passed away from a heart attack in 2012 at the age of 64. Kaufmann left behind a legacy as a talented actor and a complex figure whose life was marred by both triumph and adversity.
