Early Career and Club Success

Gurban Gurbanov was born on December 13, 1972, in Zaqatala, Azerbaijan. He began his football career in 1988 with his hometown club Dashgyn. In 1991, he spent a season with Georgian club Mertskhali before returning to Dashgyn for two more seasons.

In 1994, Gurbanov joined Turan Tovuz and helped the team win the Azerbaijani league championship. He then moved to Neftchi Baku in 1996 and played for the club until 1998.

International Career

Gurbanov made his debut for the Azerbaijan national team in 1992 and went on to become the team's all-time leading scorer with 14 goals. He played a key role in Azerbaijan's qualification campaign for the 2004 European Championship, scoring three goals in two games against Serbia and Montenegro.

Coaching Career

Gurbanov retired from playing in 2006 and immediately began his coaching career. He was appointed as the sporting director of Inter Baku before taking over as head coach of Neftchi Baku in 2006.

In 2008, Gurbanov became the head coach of Karabakh. Under his leadership, the team won seven Azerbaijani league titles, three Azerbaijani Cup titles, and reached the group stages of the UEFA Europa League twice.

Achievements and Legacy

Gurbanov is one of the most decorated figures in Azerbaijani football history. He is the all-time leading scorer for both the Azerbaijani national team and Neftchi Baku. He has also won numerous coaching awards, including the Azerbaijani Coach of the Year award on five occasions.

Gurbanov is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in Eastern Europe. His achievements with Karabakh have put the club on the European football map and have helped to raise the profile of Azerbaijani football.
