Biography of Gurguen Melkonian
Gurgen Garnikovich Melkonian was born on April 10, 1957, in the village of Molalu Martuni, Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. He was an Armenian military figure, lieutenant general, and deputy minister of defense.
Early Life and Education
In 1983, Melkonian graduated from the Agricultural Institute of Rostov-on-Don with a degree in engineering and economics. Prior to that, from 1975 to 1977, he served in the Armed Forces of the USSR.
Career
From 1983 to 1988, Melkonian worked in the Dairy Complex of the Aykashen village in the Echmiadzin district. In 1988, he actively participated in the Artsakh Liberation War.
In 1990, he served as the commander of a company in the "Special Regiment." In 1991, he became the Chief of Rear of the "Special Regiment" and later the Supreme Commander.
In 1996, Melkonian was appointed as the Chief of the Rear Department in the Ministry of Defense of Armenia. In 1998, he became the commander of the Marshal Baghramian Training Brigade.
In 2000, Melkonian was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Defense of Armenia and was promoted to the rank of Major General. In 2003, he was further promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
Awards
Melkonian has been honored with the second-degree "Battle Cross" of Armenia and the "Battle Cross" of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. He has also been awarded the first-degree medals "Marshal Baghramian - 100," "50 Years," "Drastamat Kanayan," and "For Impeccable Service."
