Early Life and Education

Gudi Melby was born on February 3, 1981, in Orkdal, Norway, to Terje Melby, a bank employee, and Berit Melby, a stay-at-home mother and school worker. She attended primary school in Røbyggen from 1988 to 1994 and graduated high school in Orkanger in 2000. In 2007, she earned a Master's degree in Scandinavian Languages and Pedagogy from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Teaching Career

After completing her degree, Melby worked as a teacher at Gerhard Schøning School in Trondheim (2007-2008). She then became a Norwegian language instructor at the Faculty of Education at HiST, which later merged with NTNU (2008-2011).

Political Involvement

Melby's political career began in 1999, when she was elected to the Orkdal Municipal Council. She served on the Trondheim City Council (2007-2011) and the Oslo City Council (2013-2015). In 2015, she became the leader of the Oslo chapter of the Liberal Party and served as Deputy Chair of the Oslo City Council's Transport and Environment Committee. From 2016 to 2018, she chaired the board of the Norwegian Language Council.

Storting and Ministerial Positions

Melby was elected to the Storting, the Norwegian parliament, in 2021 as a representative for Oslo. She previously served as a replacement member for Trine Skei Grande from 2018 to 2020 while Grande was Minister of Education. In 2020, Melby became Minister of Education and Integration in Erna Solberg's government. She resigned from this position in 2021.

Leadership of the Liberal Party

In 2020, Melby was elected leader of the Liberal Party, succeeding Trine Skei Grande. She led the party through the 2021 parliamentary elections and continues to serve as its leader.
