Early Life and EducationMihaly Karolyi was born on March 4, 1875, in Fót, Hungary. Coming from a wealthy and influential family, Karolyi received a privileged education.
Political Career
In 1910, Karolyi entered politics as a member of the Parliament. He soon became the leader of the Independence Party and a vocal critic of the government's close ties to Austria.
Doctrine of Reconciliation and Independence
Karolyi developed a political doctrine based on reducing ties with Austria, pursuing reconciliation with neighboring countries, and granting concessions to non-Hungarian minorities. He advocated for democratic reforms, including land distribution to peasants.
Appointed Prime Minister
As World War I reached its end and the Austro-Hungarian Empire crumbled, King Charles I appointed Karolyi as Prime Minister on October 31, 1918.
Proclamation of the Republic
On November 16, 1918, Hungary declared itself a republic, with Karolyi as its provisional president. However, the Allied Powers refused to recognize Hungary's independence, and neighboring countries claimed territory.
Failed Reforms and Resignation
Karolyi's efforts to implement his reforms were hindered by chaos within the country and external pressures. He resigned as president on March 20, 1919, after receiving an ultimatum from the Allied Powers.
Exile and Return
Following his resignation, Karolyi left Hungary and lived in poverty as his property was confiscated by the new government. He returned to Hungary in May 1946 and was greeted as a former president.
Diplomatic Service and Resignation
Karolyi served as Hungarian ambassador to France until 1949, when he resigned in protest against the political purges and show trials in Budapest.

Mihaly Karolyi died in Vence, France, on March 20, 1955. He is remembered as the first president of the Hungarian Republic and as a visionary politician who advocated for independence, reconciliation, and democratic principles.
