Heinrich Gustav Bongard: A German Botanist in Russian Service
Early Life and EducationHeinrich Gustav Bongard was born on September 12, 1786, in Bonn, Germany. He studied at the Medico-Surgical Josephine Academy in Vienna, graduating in 1810 with a doctorate in surgery.
Medical Practice in Russia
In 1819, Bongard began practicing medicine in Russia. He became a doctor at the Medico-Surgical Academy and a member of the Alexander Lodge of Masonic Blessing in Moscow.
Academic Career in St. Petersburg
From 1823, Bongard served as Professor of Botany at St. Petersburg University, where he lectured in Latin. He was also the senior physician at the Imperial Charitable Society's Home for the Poor (1823-1833) and the staff physician at the Orphanage for Poor Children (1825-1831).
Contributions to Botany
Bongard's initiative led to the establishment of a botanical museum at the Academy in 1823. He played a key role in describing plant collections gathered by Mertens and Postels in Brazil and in Russian North American territories.
Awards and Membership
In 1826, Bongard was awarded the Order of Saint Vladimir, 4th Class. He was a member of the Moscow Society of Naturalists (1820) and the Physical-Medical Society of Moscow University (1821).
Death and Legacy
Bongard died in St. Petersburg on August 25, 1839, and was buried at the Smolensk Evangelical Cemetery. His works were published primarily in the Academy of Sciences journals Mémoires and Bulletin scientifique during the 1830s.
