Gustav Hermann von Alvensleben
Gustav Hermann von Alvensleben was a distinguished Prussian cavalry general.
Early Life and Education
Born on January 17, 1827, in Rathenow, Alvensleben was the son of a cavalry general. He received his education at the cadet corps in Berlin and Potsdam.
Military Career
As an officer of the General Staff, Alvensleben participated in the Prussian wars against Denmark (1864), Austria (1866), and France (1870-1871). During the Franco-Prussian War, he commanded the 15th Uhlan Regiment, distinguishing himself in the Battle of Metz. For his bravery, he was awarded the prestigious Pour le Mérite.
Senior Commands
After commanding cavalry brigades and divisions, Alvensleben ascended to the leadership of the 5th Army Corps in 1886. He attained the rank of Generalmajor in 1874 and Generalleutnant in 1880.
In 1886, Alvensleben became a General der Kavallerie and assumed command of the 13th (Württemberg) Army Corps. He retired in 1890 and was bestowed with the Order of the Black Eagle.
Late Years and Legacy
Gustav Hermann von Alvensleben passed away on February 1, 1905, at Möckmühl Castle in Baden-Württemberg. He left behind a legacy of military service and distinction.
