Early Life and Career
Guy Parmelin was born in the French-speaking canton of Vaud, Switzerland, on November 9, 1959. He graduated from an agricultural college in Marcelin, Vaud, and worked as a farmer. Parmelin joined the Swiss People's Party (SVP) and served in the military, attaining the rank of corporal.
Political Career
From 2000 to 2004, Parmelin led the SVP's local chapter in Vaud. In 2003, he was elected to the National Council. In 2015, outgoing SVP Federal Council member Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf was expelled from the party. Parmelin was one of three candidates put forward by the SVP to replace her.
Federal Council Member
On January 1, 2016, Parmelin was elected to the Federal Council, responsible for the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sports. In early 2019, he was transferred to the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research.
Vice Presidency and Presidency
In mid-December 2019, Parmelin was elected Vice President for 2020. He assumed the role on January 1, 2020. In late December 2020, he was elected President for 2021. He took office on January 1, 2021.
During his presidency, Parmelin hosted the Russia-US summit in Geneva in June 2021. He met with the presidents of both countries.
Personal Life
Guy Parmelin is married and lives with his family in Bursins and Bern.
