Gültekin Asgarova: Azerbaijani Officer, Physician, and National Hero
Early Life and EducationGültekin Asgarova was born on November 20, 1960, in Baku, Azerbaijan. She graduated with honors from School No. 200 in the Narimanov district in 1978. Asgarova went on to pursue medicine at the Azerbaijan Medical University.
Medical Career
Asgarova worked at the military hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs while attending university. After graduating in 1989, she began her medical career at the VIII Ambulance Station. She later worked as an anesthesiologist-resuscitator at the urological hospital.
Military Service and Heroism
In 1992, Asgarova volunteered to serve on the front lines of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. She fought bravely in the battles of Turshsu and Shusha, evacuating wounded soldiers from the battlefield and providing medical assistance. Asgarova also participated in the defense of Lachin and Qubadli districts.
Tragically, Asgarova was killed in action on June 20, 1992, during the battle in the Aranzamin-Nakhchivanik direction. Despite her young age, she left behind a legacy of courage and sacrifice.
Posthumous Honors
For her bravery and devotion to her country, Gültekin Asgarova was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan by Presidential Decree No. 31 on November 20, 1993. She was buried in the Alley of Martyrs in Baku.
Legacy
Gültekin Asgarova's memory continues to live on in Azerbaijan. School No. 200, where she studied, has been renamed in her honor. Additionally, a ship in the Azerbaijani civilian fleet bears her name, and a museum has been established in her memory aboard the vessel. A monument to Asgarova has also been erected in one of the hospitals in the Narimanov district.
