Djamel Belmadi is an Algerian professional football manager and former player who was born on May 28, 1976, in Champigny-sur-Marne, France. He began his playing career at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and played for several other clubs in France and England, including Marseille, Celta Vigo, Manchester City, and Southampton.
Professional Career
Belmadi's professional career began at PSG in 1994. He spent four years at the club, winning the Coupe de France in 1995 and the Coupe de la Ligue in 1998. In 1998, he moved to Marseille, where he spent three seasons and won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000.
After leaving Marseille, Belmadi had brief stints with Celta Vigo in Spain and Manchester City in England. He then joined Southampton in 2006, where he played for two seasons before retiring from playing in 2008.
International Career
Belmadi was born in France to Algerian parents. He was eligible to play for both France and Algeria at the international level. He initially represented France at youth levels but eventually decided to play for Algeria.
He made his debut for the Algerian national team in 2000 and went on to earn 20 caps, scoring one goal. Belmadi was part of the Algerian squad that participated in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Managerial Career
After retiring from playing, Belmadi began his managerial career at Qatar SC in 2010. He then managed Lekhwiya (now Al-Duhail) from 2012 to 2018, winning the Qatar Stars League five times and the Emir of Qatar Cup twice.
In 2018, Belmadi was appointed manager of the Algerian national team. He led the team to victory at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, ending Algeria's 29-year wait for a continental title. Under Belmadi, Algeria also won the Arab Cup in 2021.
