Early Life and Education:Sugiyama Hajime was born in 1880. He graduated from the Army War College in 1910 and embarked on a distinguished military career.
Military Service:
- From 1923 to 1925 and 1928 to 1930, he served as Chief of the Military Affairs Bureau within the Ministry of War.
- In 1925-28, he headed the Procurement Bureau of the Aviation Department.
- In 1930-32, he was promoted to Vice-Minister of War.
- From 1932 to 1933, he commanded the 12th Infantry Division on the island of Kyushu.
- From 1933 to 1936, he led the Department of Army Aviation.
- In 1936-37, he became Inspector-General of Military Education.Ascension Through the Ranks:
In 1935, Sugiyama became a member of the Supreme War Council. From March to May 1937, he held the post of War Minister in the cabinet of S. Hayashi. His influence continued to grow, and in 1938, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff.
Wartime Command:
- From 1938 to 1939, Sugiyama commanded the North China Front and concurrently the Mongolian Front.
- On January 5, 1940, he ascended to one of the highest ranking positions in the army as Chief of the General Staff.
Supporter of War:
Sugiyama was a staunch advocate for the initiation of hostilities against the United States and held fiercely militaristic beliefs. He played a pivotal role in planning and directing the operations of the Japanese ground forces throughout the war.
Post-War Career:
- In 1944, Hideki Tojo removed Sugiyama from his post as Chief of the General Staff and assumed the position himself.
- Sugiyama was appointed Inspector of Combat Training in July 1944.
- In July 1944, he joined the government of K. Koiso as War Minister.- In April 1945, he relinquished his post to K. Anami and was assigned as commander of the 1st Combined Army, tasked with defending Kyushu from invasion.
Tragic End:
On September 12, 1945, Sugiyama committed suicide by gunshot alongside his wife, following the Japanese surrender.
