Rebbe Chaim-Zhanvl of Rybnitsa: A Hasidic Sage and Miracle Worker
Early LifeReb Chaim-Zhanvl, the founder of the Rybnitsa dynasty, was born in the town of Botosani in Bessarabia in 1902. After his father's death when he was three, he was raised by Reb Matisl, the Steineshter Rebbe, who became a lifelong mentor.
Education and Marriage
Reb Chaim-Zhanvl received his primary education and a rabbinic ordination at the renowned Tsirelson Yeshiva in Kishinev. He later married Rebbetzin Surke and served as a rabbi in various towns in Bessarabia.
Wartime and Deportation
During World War II, Reb Chaim-Zhanvl was deported to the Rybnitsa ghetto in Transnistria, where he survived the occupation. After the war, he chose to remain in Rybnitsa.
A Life of Austerity and Discipleship
In Rybnitsa, Reb Chaim-Zhanvl became known as a miracle worker and attracted followers from all walks of life. His ascetic lifestyle set him apart, featuring extensive hours of prayer, frequent rituals of purification, and extreme fasting and sleep deprivation.
Rabbi and Community Leader
Reb Chaim-Zhanvl played a central role in the local Jewish community, serving as a mohel, shochet, and chazzan. He welcomed thousands of visitors annually, who sought his advice and blessings.
Immigration and Later Years
In 1972, Reb Chaim-Zhanvl immigrated to Israel and later to Brooklyn, New York. He founded two Rybnitsa synagogues in Monsey, New York, and Borough Park, Brooklyn.
Legacy
Rebbe Chaim-Zhanvl of Rybnitsa passed away on the 24th of Tishrei 5756 (1995). His tomb in Monsey remains a pilgrimage site for those seeking his blessings. His teachings and the Rybnitsa dynasty he established continue to inspire and guide followers to this day.
