Early Life and EducationHalle Berry is an American film actress who gained fame for her roles in popular Hollywood films. She was born Maria Halle Berry in August 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was named after a local landmark, Halle's Department Store. Halle grew up with her older sister Heidi. Their parents worked at a psychiatric clinic, with Halle's mother, Judith Ann Hawkins, being a nurse and her father, Jerome Jesse Berry, working as a driver. The girls' parents divorced when Halle was 4 years old, and they were raised solely by their mother.
Early Challenges
When Halle started school, she experienced racism for the first time. Until the 3rd grade, she attended a school in a predominantly African-American neighborhood where her mother was viewed with confusion as a white woman. When the family moved to a predominantly white neighborhood, Halle felt uncomfortable being the only dark-skinned student.
