Han Duck-soo

Han Duck-soo is the 34th Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, serving since May 21, 2022. He is an economist, diplomat, and civil servant who has previously held the position of Prime Minister twice.

Early Life and Education

Han was born in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do, on June 18, 1949. He graduated from Seoul National University's School of Economics in 1971 and Harvard University in 1984.

Public Service

Han began his career in 1970 with the National Tax Service. In 1982, he worked at the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. From 1997 to 1998, he served as Commissioner of the Korea Patent Office, and from 1998 to February 2001, he was Minister of Commerce.

In 2001, Han was appointed Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the OECD. In 2003, he became Director of the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade. He served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy from March 15, 2005 to July 2006, and as Acting Prime Minister from March 14 to April 19, 2006. In July 2006, he was appointed Economic Advisor to President Roh Moo-hyun.

Prime Minister

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook in April 2007, Han became Prime Minister.

Ambassador and Civil Service

On March 9, 2009, Han was appointed Ambassador to the United States. He served in this position until February 17, 2012.

From 2012 to 2015, Han chaired the Korea International Trade Association.

Return to the Prime Ministership

In 2022, after the election of President Yoon Suk-yeol, Han was again elected by the parliament to serve as Prime Minister at the age of 72, becoming the oldest person to hold the position in the country's history.

Impeachment

On September 21, 2023, the National Assembly voted 175 to 1 to impeach Han on charges of incompetence. It was the first successful impeachment vote against a Prime Minister in South Korean history. However, the President is expected to veto the legislature's decision.

Personal Life

Han is married to Choi A-young and has no children.
