Hans Backe: A Renowned Swedish Footballer and Coach

Early Life and Career in Sweden

Hans Backe began his football career in his native Sweden, representing various lower-division clubs during the 1970s. Notably, he spent a season with the Brommapojkarna football club.

Coaching Successes in Scandinavia

Backe embarked on his coaching journey with the Swedish club Djurgården in 1982. In two seasons, he led the team to 38 wins, 20 draws, and just 12 losses. Under his guidance, Djurgården secured first place in the Division 2 Norra, the third tier of the Swedish football league system at the time.

Following his initial successes with Djurgården, Backe coached several other prominent Scandinavian clubs, including Molde, Hammarby, Östers IF, and AIK. In 1989, he guided Östers IF to promotion to Division 1 Södra and the following season, the club went undefeated to earn a spot in Allsvenskan, the Swedish top flight.

Triumphs in Denmark

Hans Backe achieved his most significant coaching triumphs in Denmark, securing the Danish Superliga title four times. In his first season in Denmark, he led Aalborg to victory in the 1998-1999 Superliga and guided the club to the Danish Cup final.

In 2001, Backe returned to Denmark to assume the reins at FC Copenhagen. Under his management, the Danish club experienced remarkable success, capturing three Superliga titles, one Danish Cup, and two Danish Super Cups.

International and MLS Coaching Stints

In 2006, Backe took charge of the Greek club Panathinaikos but was dismissed after only five games. Despite winning two out of three league matches, losses to Ionikos 2-0 at home and a draw with Metalurh Zaporizhzhia in the UEFA Cup led to his departure.

In 2007, Backe was appointed assistant coach of Manchester City under Sven-Göran Eriksson. He later returned to Sweden to serve as a senior adviser to Östers IF and as a football commentator for TV4.

In October 2009, Backe was named manager of Notts County. However, he resigned seven weeks later due to a dispute over unpaid wages.

In January 2010, Backe joined Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls as their head coach.
