Gerhard Berger

Early Career

Gerhard Berger began his racing career in Formula Ford and the German Formula 3 Championship. In late 1974, he moved up to the European Formula 2 Championship.

Formula 2 and Early Formula 1

In the 1975 Formula 2 season, Berger finished four times, with a second-place finish at the Salzburgring. In 1976, he recorded three fourth-place finishes and made two Formula 1 World Championship appearances, failing to finish both times.

Surtees and Penske

In 1977, Berger joined the Formula 1 team Surtees for the start of the season. He failed to score any points and was replaced by Larry Perkins after the Monaco Grand Prix. Berger returned for the final six races of the season, driving for Penske and ATS.
