Early Life and Professional Career
Wolfgang Bongartz began his professional football career as a central midfielder for Wattenscheid 09 in Bonn. In 1974, he joined Schalke 04, where he spent the next four seasons, amassing 131 appearances and scoring 24 goals.
Successful Time at Kaiserslautern
Bongartz's most successful period came with Kaiserslautern, where he played from 1978 to 1984. He made 167 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals. During his time there, he helped Kaiserslautern secure a runners-up finish in the German Championship in 1977 and bronze medals in 1979 and 1980. He also reached the final of the German Cup in 1981.
International Career and Honours
Bongartz's exceptional performances earned him four caps for the West German national team. He was a member of the squad that finished second at the 1976 European Championship.
Coaching Career
