Hans Fredrik Gude

Early Life and Education

Hans Fredrik Gude, a renowned Norwegian landscape and marine painter, studied drawing at The Royal Art School in Oslo from 1838 to 1841. In 1841, he moved to Düsseldorf and studied under Andreas Achenbach. In 1842, Gude entered the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, where he trained with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer.

Return to Norway and Düsseldorf

After graduating in 1846, Gude returned to Norway with his friend and fellow Norwegian artist, Adolph Tidemand. From 1848 to 1850, he lived in Oslo before returning to Düsseldorf. In 1852, Gude's works were awarded the Golden Medal of the Berlin Academy of Arts.

Professor and Artist

In 1854, Gude became a professor of landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy. He temporarily left teaching in 1861 and lived in Betws-y-Coed, North Wales, from 1862 to 1864. From 1864 to 1870, he was the director of the Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe and continued to teach as a professor of landscape painting from 1874 to 1880.

Berlin Years

In 1880, Gude moved to Berlin, where he lived with his brother-in-law, the sculptor Otto Lessing, and taught at the Berlin Academy from 1880 to 1901. He became a member of the senate of the Berlin Academy of Arts.

Legacy

Gude's expressive and dramatic landscapes continue to inspire artists to this day. His work represents the romantic spirit of the Düsseldorf School and exemplifies the beauty and majesty of the Norwegian landscape.
