Sargis Muradovich Aghajanyan
Sargis Muradovich Aghajanyan was an Armenian portrait painter, teacher, and People's Artist of the Armenian SSR.
Early Life and Education
Aghajanyan was born in 1863 in the village of Aghbulagh, Nagorno-Karabakh. He received his artistic education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, graduating in 1900.
Return to Armenia and Teaching
After graduating, Aghajanyan returned to his hometown of Shusha, where he created his first notable works, including the portraits of his parents. In 1903, he moved to Rostov-on-Don, where he taught drawing in local schools.
Career in Yerevan
In 1922, Aghajanyan relocated to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. There, he continued his teaching career at the Yerevan Art College (1922-1940). It was during this period that he created the majority of his best-known paintings.
Portraiture
Aghajanyan's realistic portraits often evolved into "portrait-types," capturing the character and essence of his subjects. Among his most famous works are "Uncle Sedrak" and "Vasil" (1926), as well as "Street Child" (1928). His self-portraits, painted in 1925 and 1926, are known for their deep psychological insight.
Legacy
Aghajanyan's artistic legacy is preserved primarily at the National Gallery of Armenia in Yerevan. His works are highly regarded for their mastery of characterization, sensitivity, and ability to capture the human condition.
