Hans Växby: A Methodist Bishop in Russia and Eurasia

Hans Växby is a Methodist bishop who has played a significant role in the establishment and growth of Methodist communities throughout Russia and Eurasia.

Early Life and Calling

Växby was born into a religious family, with his mother attending a Pentecostal church before converting to Methodism. Inspired by his mother's faith, Växby joined the Methodist community at a young age.

Theological Education and Ministry in Scandinavia

In 1967, Växby completed his theological studies at the Scandinavian School of Theology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He served as a pastor in Finland and was elected Bishop of Scandinavia and the Baltics in 1989. In 2001, Växby became a member of the Swedish-speaking Finnish Provisional Annual Conference and served as a bishop in Helsinki.

Mission to Russia and Eurasia

Throughout the 1990s, Växby dedicated himself to supporting and strengthening Methodist communities not only in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia but also in Russia. His efforts were instrumental in establishing a solid Methodist presence in these regions.

Bishop of Eurasia

In 2005, Växby was elected Bishop of Eurasia, overseeing Methodist communities across a vast territory that included Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus. Under his leadership, Methodism in Russia and Eurasia has experienced significant growth and expansion.
