Biography of Hans-Werner Sinn

Early Life and Education

Hans-Werner Sinn is a German economist, born in Brake, Westphalia. He studied economics at the University of Münster from 1967 to 1972, and earned his doctorate degree from the University of Mannheim in 1978. In 1993, he received the 'venia legendi' or the right to give lectures from the University of Mannheim.

Academic Career

Sinn began his academic career as a full professor at the University of Munich in 1984, initially focusing on economics and insurance. In 1994, his research shifted to economics and public finance. In addition to his work in Munich, he also held professorships at the University of Western Ontario in Canada during the periods of 1978-79 and 1984-85. Sinn has worked at prestigious institutions such as the London School of Economics, University of Bergen, Stanford University, Princeton University, and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since 1988, he has been an honorary professor at the University of Vienna.

Professional Achievements

From 1997 to 2000, Sinn served as the president of the Association for Social Policy, a prominent group of German-speaking economists. He became the president of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research on February 1, 1999. In 2006, he also became the president of the International Institute of Public Finance. Sinn was ranked fourth among the most important economists in Germany in 2006 by 'Handelsblatt'. The research study 'Ursprung and Zimmer' placed him even higher, second only to Nobel laureate Reinhard Selten. In the same year, Sinn topped the list of most cited economists in the 'RePEc' ranking. He was also recognized by the German 'Financial Times' as one of the two German professors capable of attracting a significant number of students.

Authorship and Media Presence

Sinn is a prolific author and has published numerous journal articles. He frequently writes for newspapers, gives interviews, and appears on radio and television programs. He has been a guest on various talk shows, engaging in political discussions. Sinn's book 'Ist Deutschland noch zu retten?' (Is Germany Still Savable?), which sold over 100,000 copies, sparked significant political debates and is regarded as one of the most famous and popular monographs on state policy. In 2005, he published 'Die Basarökonomie' (The Bazaar Economy), which served as a continuation of his previous book. In October 2008, Sinn released a new book titled 'Das grüne Paradoxon' (The Green Paradox). 'Ist Deutschland noch zu retten?' was translated into English in 2007.
